Henna To Color Your Hair And As A Conditoner

Henna is my favorite way to color my hair. Commercial Hair colors have a lot of chemicals like sulphate, alchohol , etc which makes the hair dry and frizzy.

Henna is a plant leaf powder, a natural way to color your hair and also it conditions your hair making your hair smooth, shiny and silky.

Henna For Color

Henna produces different shades like brown, red, gold and black with different additives. 
Usage:
Every 4-6 weeks

Things Needed:

  • Henna powder
  • Mixing bowl, plastic is best
  • Applying Brush
  • Mixing spoon
  • Comb
  • Tea/coffee
  • Vaseline

Basic Henna Recipe For Color:


½ cup Henna Powder

½ cup hot water (or coffee, tea, etc.)

1 teaspoon lemon juice or Apple Cider Vinegar

You can chose the base color and substitute with water like shown below.

Directions to Mix Henna:

  1. Apply the vaseline on your forehead and neck area in order to avoid the henna mixture on those places
  2. Measure henna, oils in a mixing bowl.
  3. Make a tea with hot water.
  4. Add the tea little by little to mix it with henna in order to avoid lumps.
  5. Mix the ingredients well and cover it with plastic wrap
  6. Let it sit for 12 hours or more so that all the colors can blend in.

Directions to apply the Henna Mixture On hair:

  1. Divide your hair into two parts.
  2. Wear a disposable/ reusable gloves.
  3. Take some henna mixture onto your hands and apply in the direction of hair.
  4. Apply this mixture evenly onto to your and leave it on for 2 to 4 hours.
  5. Wash it off with water

Note: Do not use shampoo for 24 hours. 

Choosing Additives For Coloring your Hair

  • Liquid: Water, tea, coffee, apple cider vinegar etc. It must be warm so that it does not have any lumps while mixing.
  • Lemon Juice: This can help boost the color of the henna. Using lemon for hair may be too drying, so Mix 1 tsp of lemon juice with other liquids so that it is not too drying.

  • Gold Tone: Chamomile Tea, Calendula Tea.

  • Brown Tone: Coffee and dark teas

  • Essentials Oils: These are optional. But you can add them to increase the scent of your henna mixture.

Henna as a Conditioner

Henna can be used as a conditioner along with other additives like shown below. Usage of Henna will make your hair soft ans shiny
Usage:
Every 2-3 weeks

Additives for conditioning your hair:

  • Coconut milk: It contains all the essential nutrients required for healthy hair, boosting your hair follicles and promoting hair growth.
  • Yogurt: It has enzymes and hence yogurt along with henna is very conditioning and it also cures scalp problems.
  • Egg: It has lot of conditioning properties and it makes your hair soft and shiny
  • Honey:  It is very good for hair and draws moisture into hair. It has a lot anti-healing properties and is very good or conditioning your hair

  2. Measure henna, oils in a mixing bowl.
  3. Add yogurt and mix thoroughly without any lumps.
  4. Mix the ingredients well and cover it with plastic wrap
  5. Let it sit for 2 hours and then apply the mixture.
